Transcendental Sound Vibration Captures The Hearts Of Everyone: By Maharishi Das
Every single day I get calls from new and old customers looking for the ultimate in sound perfection as they all understand that great sound helps transport them to another place. While for many this music may not be spiritual but they certainly experience spiritual bliss, they can still understand for an artist to be able to create wonderful music is a great gift, and without the lords intervention nothing is possible.
Over the past 40 years this has brought me to many questioning souls, who are all looking for a higher perfection in sound. Even though it’s merely a glimpse of what is possible in the spiritual world (no system will ever replicate the sound of the lords flute) at least we get a glimpse of something spiritual in the here and now.
I have spent my entire life playing with components, interconnects, capacitors, resistors and different exotic materials, all in the quest for the ultimate in sound reproduction and some of the most exotic products to be ever produced. I consider myself to be an artisan quietly working on my passion, on a daily basis. To the lay man it is impossible to justify that this quality of sound can help people in many ways, but I know it is my duty as a devotee to introduce others to the ultimate sound, the chanting of the holy name Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Fortunately I meet a whole world of individuals who would never normally meet devotees, many of which are quite reclusive and have said they see devotees as a little weird. This impression soon changes once they listen properly to a good sound system and a bit of love, after all we all need a bit of love.
Today I was visited by a lovely sweet soul by the name of Richard, who came to purchase some equipment, I had never met him before. I sat him down to listen to some of my systems. He was astonished by what could be extracted from an original 1950’s vinyl record. He remarked that there was a purity he hadn’t believed possible.
He asked me about what drives me to do what I do. I said, “I feel so satisfied when I have given my best.”
He asked how I get inspired to do what I do. I said, “I feel the lord has empowered me to illustrate the power of music to calm and heal the soul,”
He told me he felt there was something special about me compared to other dealers. I said, “I see myself as a servant wanting to give a big part of me to others”. I then played the happening album to Richard. He was absolutely mesmerised by the powerful sound from the system. Richard then revealed he had a nephew who introduced him to chanting but he was not into the idea at the time.
I explained that this record is the first Hare Krishna album produced in 1966 by Alan Kallman in New York, and Mr Kallman went to see Srila Prabhupada at 26 second avenue one evening, the kirtan touched him so much that he became inspired to put all his knowledge into producing this album. Richard said digital would not have that same natural sound that vinyl has, I said yes and in those days everything thing was analogue. Richard shed a tear as he heard the sheer detail that was coming of this record so much so, he said I hear a instrument that has a wooden sound I replied that this instrument is a wooden kohl and his divine grace was the one who was playing this instrument. We continued to listen to the Mahamantra for the full 12 minutes. I then went on to the second side to listen to the Samsara prayers during this I could see Richards facial expressions his jaw dropped wide open, I asked him is something wrong he said this voice is coming across with so much purity, I explained this is the pure devotee himself, what shocked me was that Richard said he felt so privileged to be able to hear such a exhaulted devotee like he was in the room. Richard soon understood that Mr Kallman was so inspired by hearing the devotees that he just wanted to give everything he had by serving the lord in the way he knew best.
So, I asked, “Would you like to chant with me?”
He was unsure at first. “I come here to buy something, then I get my mind blown with the sound you have presented to me and now you are suggesting I chant with you! This is far out.”
I said, “Why not come next door and chant in front of my altar?” I went upstairs, got him some beads and also hid a bead bag in my pocket as the idea was to introduce him to chanting and for him to take the beads home. It is always exciting to get someone who I do not know, to get right into the the power of the holy name. Richard followed me and we started chanting together. After 10 beads, he really took to the Mantra and we soon completed one round together.
He then said, “I feel those statues are looking at me”
I explained that he was looking at the Lord Jaganath himsel, the Lord of the universe and he is looking at all of us and that I was sure he is pleased that you are sincerely chanting.
He asked, “How do you know?”
I said, “Well, you can feel him looking at you, so you have the answer already. The more you chant, the more he will look at you no matter where you are.”
Richard remarked that only listening to music connects him to something higher, I agreed, listening to great sound makes you appreciate that artists such as Miles Davies only get their talents from the Lord himself.
He had never thought of it like that before.
I said, “I appreciate all the effort and hard work put into creating music. I am surrounded by really talented musicians who are offering their talents to the Lord daily. Indeed, many get connected to the lord through sound and it is my humble abilities that have brought you here.”
He said, “Yes this has to be Krishna no doubt.” Richard cried and hugged me and said he has been feeling so lost, but now, after meeting me he feels likes a new person. I replied, “It’s not me at all, its the Maha Mantra, Please do not give up this chanting, please do not.”
Richard said, “I have seen the Hare Krishnas before but have always avoided them; but you being so kind has encouraged me to chant.”
I said, “Here, please have these two books. One is Chant and Be Happy, the other is the Gita.”
Richard was delighted and suggested that we chant together for 20 mins on the phone every day for a week, untill he got the hang of it.
I said, “Yes I would be totally delighted to.”.
Richard paused and asked, “Do I have to give up listening to Music”
“Of course no!” I replied, “Chanting actually allows one to appreciate the artists and their music better. Chanting connects your further. Chanting means you are always remembering Kṛishna Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma and all the plans he may have for us”, I then told him about Harinan, where I go out on the streets weekly and showed him some videos.
He asked me to send him some so he could listen and watch at home. Naturally, I promised to send them regularly.
I feel so humbled that a rascal like me can introduce so many to the Lord, who are totally alien to the chanting of the mantra. By just being their friends I can help so many to hear the philosophy and make their first steps towards sprituality easier. Some may take a while, but one thing is for sure; everyone is impacted by love and this love only comes from the lord himself.
Richard called me later that evening to chant with me. He explained that he chanted at home, but finds his mind wandering. When he focuses, he feels all his problems are over,
I told him the more one chants the more one’s heart will be cleansed. I explained that we all can get distracted from time to time. As we chant the mind might wander, so many ideas and thoughts may pop up, but do not be alarmed, just keep on chanting. The mind will learn to focus as you get used to doing it. Truly, nothing will give you greater value than keeping the mind focused on Krishnas names.
Please pray I carry on meeting these great loving souls.
