Srila Bhaktisiddhanta said that the heart of japa is the mood of service, that is, we are praying for service and for being pure. But if while chanting we are not expressing the mood of service (“I want to love you,” “I want to serve you,” “I want to be purified,” and so on) then we are not really chanting.
