Sex happens, and then what? In our society, a child is a disposable unwanted byproduct. Such children are unwanted by their parents, if allow to take birth at all. As the consciousness at death directs the person toward their next body, so the consciousness of the parents call a particular type of child to the union.
In the Vedic system there is the Garbhādhāna-Saṁskāra or purification rite for procreation. If the purpose of sex is enjoyment, then the child called will be very selfish and focused on enjoyment. When most children are born through a union where both parents are simply trying to enjoy to their fullest, a generation of sensualists will be the result.
We can just think, well, OK, so some want to enjoy this world and others maybe want to prepare themselves for the world to come, so what? The issue is that a sensualist society, however scientifically advanced, can not endure. Just as an individual focused on personal immediate happiness, will become progressively more disillusioned and unhappy, so a society of such persons, will become progressively more unstable and tend to crumble.
