Surabhi Kunja and Svananda Sukhada Kunja | Ramai Swami

Another holy pilgrimage was to Surabhi Kunja and Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s Bhajana Kutir.

While living here Srila Bhaktivinoda wrote the Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, which describes the glories of Navadvipa dhama. He also discovered Lord Caitanya’s appearance place during this time. Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s samadhi and Gaurakisora dasa Babaji’s bhajana kutira are also here.

Upstairs in the main house is the bedroom of Bhaktivinoda Thakura. There is a temple next to the original house where Gaura-Gadadhara, the original deities worshiped by Bhaktivinoda, are located. Bhaktivinoda Thakura predicted that a great devotee would appear and spread Krishna consciousness all over the world.

The place where Surabhi and Indra were performing gaura-bhajana is known as Surabhi-kunja. Presently there is a Gaudiya Matha temple at Surabhikunja and the deities are worshiped in a small house. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura also stayed at this place for a few years. This temple is located on the bank of the Jalangi River.

If you go from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s Svananda-sukhada-kunja towards the boat ghat, this temple will be on your right about two hundred meters from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s place.

This place is non-different from Surabhivana in Vrindavana. It fulfils the desires of devotees and one who builds a cottage and worships here, will easily become absorbed in meditation on Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet.
